About World Cost of Living

Empowering informed decisions with transparent, data-driven cost of living insights

🎯

Our Mission

World Cost of Living was created to provide transparent, reliable cost of living data for digital nomads, expats, remote workers, and anyone planning to relocate or travel internationally. We believe everyone deserves access to clear, comparable information about living costs around the world.

What We Do

We aggregate and compare cost of living data across 160+ cities worldwide using a unique β€œanchor item” methodology. Instead of relying solely on traditional indices, we track real prices of universally available goods and services that people actually use in their daily lives.

Our Methodology

Data Sources

  • The Economist's Big Mac Index β€” Global food price benchmarks
  • Numbeo β€” Crowdsourced cost of living database
  • World Bank β€” GDP per capita (PPP) for estimation models
  • Regional pricing APIs β€” Local market data for Uber, Starbucks, YouTube Premium

Index Calculation

Our Anchor Cost Index is a weighted average of five key indicators, normalized against global averages:

πŸ” Big Mac (20%) + 🏠 Rent (30%) + πŸš— Uber (20%)

+ β˜• Starbucks (15%) + πŸ“Ί YouTube Premium (15%)

Update Frequency

Prices are collected as dated snapshots, not live feeds. An automated pipeline periodically re-checks sources, and the site is updated when new data is verified. All prices are converted to USD using the exchange rates in effect at collection time.

Prices as of Feb 7, 2026 (snapshot).

How We Ensure Accuracy

  • Cross-referencing multiple independent data sources
  • Automated pipeline that periodically re-checks source prices for changes
  • Community price submission system for local verification
  • GDP-based estimation models (RΒ² 0.46–0.72) for cities lacking direct data, clearly labeled as β€œEstimated”
⚠️

Limitations & Transparency

We believe in transparency about our data's limitations:

  • β€’Prices can vary significantly within the same city depending on neighborhood
  • β€’40 of our 160 cities (25%) use GDP-PPP-based estimation models rather than directly observed prices β€” these are clearly labeled β€œEstimated” throughout the site
  • β€’Exchange rate fluctuations can impact USD-converted values
  • β€’Individual lifestyle choices significantly affect actual costs
  • β€’Data should be used as a general guide, not financial advice
